Gold was first discovered in the Osceola District in 1872, sparking decades of productive mining. The district's total documented production exceeds 131,700 ounces, with the legendary 24-pound nugget found in Dry Gulch in 1878 — believed to be the largest ever discovered in the state of Nevada.
